Been a While // Clint & Lizzie
Elizabeth rolled up her magazine at Clint’s response, swatting him with it playfully. “Peace and quiet is my forte,” she lied with a smirk, closing her eyes and beginning to hum. “Meditation is the way forward, Barton.”
She stopped the noise she was making, but kept her eyes shut. “Nope. It wasn’t hard at all. Would you like to know why?”
Not waiting for an answer, she finally looked up at him. “Because I knew you’d come back.” She added a delicate nod and smile to the end of her sentence, pleased to get out that little bit of truth.
Clint huffed out a laugh, catching hold of the magazine and tugging it out of Lizzie’s hands. “Yeah,” he agreed sarcastically. “You’re so good at shutting up.” He tapped her on the nose with the stolen magazine as she started humming, and then grinned at her next words.
“That was so cliched,” Clint told her smugly, smacking the magazine against her shoulder. “It belonged in some kind of rom-com movie with a blonde heroine and a war hero boyfriend or something.” He paused, narrowing his eyes. “Please tell me you didn’t spend the last week watching rom-coms in your mansion.”
Despite his mocking, Clint was touched by what Lizzie had said. It had been a long time since anyone other than Coulson and Natasha cared about whether he was coming home from an op for anything other than a professional reason. And it felt even better to know there was someone who trusted him to come back.
